    This Academic Coordinator has primary responsibility for long-term planning, development, management and evaluation of academic programs related to the UC Davis Student Farm’s Market Garden (an educational production farm) and works closely with the Student Farm Director and Field Operations Coordinator to manage the teaching and research fields of the Student Farm. The Student Farm celebrates and values the UCD Davis Principles of Community as guiding principles for the work we do serving a diverse student body who bring their own unique perspectives, life experiences and academic interests.

    Job Responsibilities
    I Coordination of Academic Programs 80%
    Academic Programming (20%)
    i. Sets goals and priorities for educational programmatic activities for the Market Garden - including activities related to organic agriculture production, culturally relevant programming, and transferable skills development
    ii. Communicates and coordinates with the Student Farm Director and Field Operations Coordinator to set goals for and manage the teaching and research fields,
    iii. Programmatic activities include:
    -in-field mentoring to student employees, interns, and visitors
    -internships in the Market Garden organic agriculture production and the Fresh Focus food gleaning and donation program
    -work with faculty to coordinate, develop and deliver field based programs for sustainable ag courses
    iv. Develops strategies for achieving staffing, budgetary resources, facilities and equipment goals set together with Student Farm director
    v. contributes to grant proposals and other fundraising efforts related to the Market Garden and teaching and research fields

    Market Garden Management (60%)
    i. Manages all aspects of the 9 acre in-field teaching, production and research laboratory including:
    -Coordinating with other permanent staff, especially the field-operations coordinator
    -Supervising and mentoring up to 15 student employees and 40 interns per quarter on organic production methods, CSA, farmers market stand, and Dining Service sales management. The majority of students who participate in internships have none or little farming and gardening experience.
    -Coordinating, managing and maintaining all lands, facilities, financial resources, tools, supplies and activities and Farmer’s Market, and retail sales to Dining Services
    -Maintaining good records and organic certification
    -Working with the Director of the Student Farm and the Field Operations Manager to maintain, improve and expand facilities and equipment used in educational programs.
    -Working with the Director of the Student Farm to develop a budget and fundraise for Market Garden programs.
    -Activities include:
    a. year-round production of organic crops, primarily vegetables, herbs, and tree crops, and marketing these crops to campus customers;
    b. supervising and assisting in the management of plots used by instructors of courses and students conducting experiments;
    c. supervising undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in courses, conducting research, completing internships or working as paid employees.;
    d. supervising temporary employees

    II. University and Public Service 15%
    i. Provides informal, in-field instruction in the practical knowledge and skills used in organic crop, soil, water and pest management, as well as crop planning, harvesting, post-harvest handling, marketing and sales. Field-based instruction includes discussion of the principles and theories underlying the sustainable agricultural practices. These principles and theories will be based on sustainable science materials for organic production that have been developed by the Academic Coordinator. These materials will be used in instructional courses and be generally available to student and non-student clients.
    ii. Participate in Agricultural Sustainability Institute and UCD committee(s) related to sustainable agriculture and food systems
    iii. Conduct outreach to growers, gardeners, UC Cooperative Extension/Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCCE and UCANR), and the general public in Northern California to assist in disseminating information on sustainable production practices.
    iv. Plan and implement field days to disseminate results of research and trials at the Student Farm, as well as demonstrate sustainable agricultural production practices in the Market Garden at the Student Farm.

    III. Professional Competence and Activity 5%
    i. Engage in various professional activities related to organic farming and sustainable agriculture education such as participating in professional meetings, presenting posters or papers at conferences, and publishing related works.
    ii. Engage in professional development trainings related to creating inclusive and culturally relevant learning environments and serving underrepresented students, especially in agricultural fields.
